What is final expense life insurance?
Updated September 11, 2026 · General insurance education
Final expense life insurance is a way to plan for a death benefit that may help loved ones with funeral costs and other expenses. You may also see the terms burial insurance or funeral insurance. Look at the actual insurance contract to understand what is being offered.
Who receives the money?
A life insurance policy names a beneficiary to receive a payable death benefit. Keep that designation current and let the beneficiary know where to find policy information. Naming someone on our callback form does not create or change a policy beneficiary. Florida’s consumer overview explains beneficiaries and policy records.
Compare the policy, not just the label
Ask whether the policy is term insurance or permanent insurance. Term coverage lasts for a specified period; permanent policies are designed for longer needs, subject to the contract and required payments. Premiums, cash values and guarantees differ. The NAIC explains the main policy types.
Prepare for your first conversation
- Which expenses would you like help planning for?
- What coverage and savings do you already have?
- What premium could you comfortably maintain?
- When would full benefits become payable, and what exclusions apply?
You can request a callback even if you are unsure of a coverage amount. This website connects you with a licensed agent for a conversation; it does not issue coverage or guarantee approval.
This guide describes general concepts, not a particular insurer’s policy or a personal coverage recommendation. Availability, premiums, eligibility and benefits vary. Review your specific policy before purchasing. Read insurance disclosures.
